SmartPlant Foundation defines clear boundaries between data that is published to the data warehouse and data that is authored in the software (created and changed). The authoring environment is independent of any data warehouse environment. Like other integrated SmartPlant authoring tools, the SmartPlant Foundation authoring data remains within the SmartPlant Foundation authoring environment until it is published into the data warehouse using the SmartPlant Foundation Desktop Client.

SmartPlant Foundation can publish to a data warehouse in the same database where the authoring data is stored or to a separate database. The authoring data resides in an authoring domain, and the published data is placed in a publish domain, resulting in data segregation even when both sets of data exist in the same database.
