This section contains information about how the user can perform tasks in the Desktop Client.

SmartPlant Foundation provides management of a plant's engineering information, encompassing the plant's design, configuration, modifications, upgrades, and refurbishment. In an integrated environment, it allows this data to be shared between applications and users. The Desktop Client provides the functionality of the SmartPlant Foundation client system through a windows-based client.

As a user, based on the software configuration and authorization of the system administrator, you can perform the following functions:

  • Use data sheets to create and manage data. This includes the following operations:

    • View the history or information from the database for a specific object

    • Update existing objects

    • View relationships between objects

    • Remove objects or object relationships

    • Create new objects and revisions

  • Use Document Management to do the following:

    • Create and manage documents and their revisions

    • Complete steps in workflows

  • Use SmartPlant Foundation to interact with the integrated environment

  • Plan and report on time-critical activities related to a project

  • Use Concurrent Engineering to manage changes to the plant without impacting the as-built configuration.

As an administrator, you can perform all administration functions that were previously available from the SmartPlant Foundation System Administration, Change Management Administration (including workflow), and Schema Object Administration applications.

You can also perform all loader functions that were previously available from the SmartPlant Foundation Loader, SmartPlant Loader, and SmartPlant Schema Loader applications.

As an administrator you can also perform the following functions:

  • Load data and plant configuration information into the SmartPlant Foundation database

  • Create, configure and manage domains and roles for more robust security and access control

  • Create and maintain basic system elements and define the functionality provided to each user of the SmartPlant Foundation system. This includes the following operations:

    • Create and maintain objects, methods, plants, and projects

    • Create and maintain relationships between objects to provide security

    • Create and maintain users and roles

    • Configure the user interface through access controls, toolbars, menus, forms, and lookups

    • Manage the security of data, methods, menus, toolbars, and more through role based access control

  • Create and maintain schema objects and define user access for the objects used in SmartPlant. Some of these tasks include the following:

    • Create view definitions, graph definitions, and edge definitions for use in SmartPlant Foundation

    • Create and attach workflows and methods to interface definitions

    • Convert class definitions in the SmartPlant schema into SmartPlant Foundation forms

    • Make all the SmartPlant schema property definitions available to SmartPlant Foundation as display items for forms

The commands and functionality that you see depend on your role and the access that has been configured for you. You may or may not see all of the commands and functionality documented here.
