What's the difference between a quick find and a query?

Quick finds are available from the toolbar or from the Find menu. The toolbar allows you to search for a type of object based on its name, while the commands on the Find menu open dialog boxes that allow you to search for objects using the object's name or its description. With both kinds of quick find, you can use wildcard characters in the text you search for (for example, n%).

Queries allow you to find objects based on detailed information about the object. With a query, you can specify search criteria that applies to different properties of an object. You can save a query to run later.

  • You can only save queries from the Query dialog box available from the main Query menu.

  • You must select the appropriate list view to launch the previously used query dialog data.

How do I search for multiple objects at the same time?

You can search for multiple objects using the ellipsis on the Find menu and in the Find box. For example:

Type all or part of the object name in the Enter name box, a wildcard, or a combination for each separate line of the query. Separate each part of the query with the | symbol. For example, *1|*2|*3.

SHARED Tip You can also copy lines directly into the multiple find pane, such as from Microsoft Excel, and the query displays each of the lines in a separate row.

How do I search for objects with special characters or symbols in their names?

To search for objects with special characters or symbols in the name or description, a \ must be added to the search criteria immediately in front of the special character.

For example, to search for ABC%123, type ABC\%123 (adding the \ between C and %).

Which wildcards can I use?

Wildcard

Details

? or _

Finds any single character.

The underscore (_) must be configured as a wildcard, so it might not be available in your system. For information on modifying site properties, see Server Manager Help.

* or %

Finds any string of characters.

When you perform a search using the * wildcard, you restrict the records returned based on your criteria. For example, if you search for an object using Name = * and UID def = *, your search results are reduced in number because the criteria specifies all objects with a name value AND all objects with a UID def value.

  1. On the Find menu, click an object type to search for.

  2. Type all or part of the object's name or description, using wildcards if needed. The description is blank by default, clear the name to just use the description.

  3. If you do not want to search for only uppercase occurrences of the criteria you typed, clear the Force upper case option.

You can define options for quick finds on the General tab of the Change User Preferences dialog box. For more information, see Change general user preferences.
