The following applies if you are using a version of the software before Update 46. For the latest instructions, see Manage related items.

You can control the access to sections in the Desktop Client by choosing the type of access control you want to use on the form, either using access groups or configuring interface owning groups. Using access groups allows you to set the type of access control at the form level and set the relationship to specific access groups at the section level. This means that you can restrict a section to a particular access group on one form, and on other forms the same section may not be restricted at all, or may be restricted by an object interface relationship rather than by access group.

To set the type of control access required for a section on a form, select one of three property options in the Type of access control display item when you update an existing form or create a new one.

None (blank) - The default option. Allows you to display all sections on a form without any access control, so each section is visible to all access groups.

Access Group - Allows you to control access directly on a section and gives you a level of control that allows you to make a section hidden, visible (read-only), or editable when you relate an access group to a section. For more information, see Configure section access groups (Modified in an update).

Interface - Allows you to create or continue to use owning groups using an object interface to control the access to sections on a form. For more information on setting up access owning group control using an object interface relationship, see Configure section owning groups (Modified in an update).

Using the interface definition owning group to control access impacts performance for operations, such as using shortcut menus, building forms, filling the properties grid, evaluating methods on shortcut menus, and others. The interface definition owning group access control is disabled by default to help improve performance. For more information on enabling this functionality, see Interface owning group access control.
