  1. Open Microsoft Excel and create a new worksheet document.

  2. Format the worksheet for the data sheet as required and save it, for example, as IPD_CustomControlValveDataSheet.xls/xlsm.

    • For information about the versions of Excel that are supported for data sheets, see SmartPlant Foundation Desktop Client platform recommendations.

    • The worksheet can be left blank to be formatted later.

    • You can designate cells to be available for data entry but not mapped to properties in SmartPlant Foundation. Text or graphics in these cells are saved with the data sheet template file.

    • You can assign unmapped cells to certain colors in the Excel file to indicate to users that the cells are unlocked and available for data entry.

    • You need to set the cells in an unlocked state in an excel worksheet to edit them. By default, the cells are in locked state.

    • Do not use special characters in mapped property cell names. Special characters include: | . - ! ? + ' % , ; & ~ * < >.

If you intend to use partially mapped data sheets, ensure you set the Support partially mapped datasheets option on the data sheet definition. If this is not set, any data entered into unmapped fields will be lost.
