Users are grouped together into organizations. Relationships with organizations control access to documents, data, communication items, and printers. Internal organizations can be specific departments or offices within your company. External organizations can be external companies, suppliers, or manufacturers.

Transmittals, actions, and technical queries are used to manage communication and document distribution between internal and external organizations.

In a project, the default security rules control access so that users from external organizations only see documentation and data originating in their organization. However, an external organization user can see the originating organization's documentation and data, if the external organization is identified as a collaborating organization by the originating organization user. Users should only be assigned roles from their own organization to avoid issues with the workflow.
