Nozzle weld thicknesses are based on Figure UW-16.1. The outward nozzle weld is compared to the cover weld required by the Code. Note that the minimum dimension of a weld is 0.7 times its leg dimension. Note also that for cover welds the maximum weld the Code requires is 0.25 inches. The pad weld requirement is typically at least one half of the element thickness. In addition to the cover welds, the total groove weld plus cover weld for inserted nozzles must be at least 1.25 times the minimum element thickness.
