Sets options for placing a support in the model.

If you already placed a Smart 3D support or a SIO support in your model, the Place Support by Structure ribbon does not display until you select the placed Smart 3D or SIO support.

 Settings

Opens the Support Properties Dialog, which is used to modify support properties.

Custom Form Definition

Opens the user defined form for an object that has a form defined. It is enabled only if a form definition is defined for the support being placed. If the support does not have the form defined, this command is not available. See User-defined Forms.

 Feature

Select one or more features or SIO routes for which you want to place a support. You must select at least one feature or SIO route. Click Reject to clear the selections and start selecting features or SIO routes again. Click Accept when you finish selecting the features or SIO routes.

The first feature or first SIO route that you select is the primary feature or primary SIO route. The software uses the cross section from the primary feature or SIO route to define the support plane. If you clear the primary selection, the second feature or second SIO route that you select becomes the new primary feature or primary SIO route.

 Structure

Select one or more Smart 3D structures or SIO structure geometries (such as a surface) to support the feature you selected. Click Reject to clear all selected structures and start selecting supporting structures. Click Accept when you finish selecting supporting structures.

Finish

Places the support using the information that you provided.

 Reject

Clears all the selected objects and restarts the selection process.

 Accept

Indicates that the object selection is complete.

System

Select the parent system for the support that you are placing. You can create systems in the Systems and Specifications task.

  • For pipe supports, the default system is the parent system of the pipe you selected first. For other disciplines, the default system is the last used system.

  • The System command does not support SIO route supports.

Rule

Displays the support types based on the rules defined in the reference data. When you select this option, the software uses an Assembly Selection Rule to filter the available supports in the Type box based on inputs such as the pipe outside diameter, distance between the supported object and the supporting object, and whether the route is above or below the supporting object. Clear the Rule option to select any available support type from the catalog.

You or your project administrator have control over how the rules are defined. See Hangers and Supports Reference Data Help.

If you placed a support using the Rule option, and later the inputs to the Assembly Selection Rule (ASR) change, the software changes the support type to a new type if the selected support no longer satisfies the ASR.

Type

Sets the kind of support that you want to place. If you select the Rule option, the software lists support types based on the rules defined in the reference data. If you clear the Rule option, the software lists the last ten support types that you placed. Select More to select a different support type.

  • Type is not available for designed supports.

  • Type is not available for SIO support catalog parts.

  • Design is not available for SIO supports.

Change Support Configuration

Cycles through the available attachment types based on the feature or supported object and the support type. This option is not available for types that do not support multiple attachment types.

Toggle Connection to Structure

Cycles through the available attachment types based on the supporting structure and the support type. If you are placing a support from two structures, the software displays two buttons, one for each structure. This option is not available for types that do not support multiple attachment types.

Toggle Face Position

Cycles through the available face positions for the supporting structure. For example, you can use this option to move a U-bolt so that it does not interfere with the web of a wide flange beam. If you are placing a support from two structures, the software displays two buttons, one for each structure. This option might not be available if there are no optional face positions.

Design

Places a design support. When you start the placement command, select the Design check box to place a design support. Clear the Design check box to place a Standard assembly. You can select or clear the Design check box whenever the Straight Feature SmartStep is active. You can even select or clear the check box after committing the feature or SIO route selection using Accept . If you select Design, the Rule check box appears dimmed.

  • A design support is a placeholder support or a container support to place parts of multiple combinations of standard supports.

  • The parts you can use to create a design support are available in the catalog. These parts are intelligent and contain property information that enables you to generate reports for the entire support.
