Hangers and supports are placed in the model using information defined in the hangers and supports reference data. Your first step should be to review, edit, and otherwise customize the delivered hangers and supports reference data using the Catalog task.

After the reference data is customized to suit the needs of a particular project, go to the Systems and Specifications task and define the systems that you want in your model. While you are not required to create your systems first, doing so keeps you from having to edit your hangers and supports after placement to assign them to the correct system.

Because hangers and supports are dependent on the optional supporting object and the supported object, you need to have those objects placed in the model before placing any hangers or supports. Examples of supporting objects include beams, plates, slabs, equipment, walls, and trenches, and Smart Interop Object member parts, equipment, rich hanger beams, slabs, trenches, walls, plate parts, and profile parts. Examples of supported objects include piping, HVAC, conduit, and cable trays, and Smart Interop Object pipes, HVAC ducts, cable trays, cable ways, and conduits. These objects are placed using the Piping, HVAC, Electrical, Civil, Molded Forms, and Structures tasks.

After the hangers and supports reference data, the needed systems, and optional supporting and supported objects are defined, you can begin placing hangers and supports in your model.
