The primary purpose of the Hangers and Supports task is to support distributive systems such as pipes, HVAC ducts, and cable trays, and SIO pipes, HVAC ducts, cable trays, and conduits. Usually, supports are connected to the supported object, such as a pipe, and to a supporting object, such as a beam. However, you can also place supports between two or more supported objects such as placing a support between two pipes.

  • Throughout this document, the word "support" is used as a generic way to refer to both supports and hangers.

  • Throughout this document, the word "feature" is used as a generic way to refer to pipes, HVAC ducts, cable trays, cable ways, and conduits.

  • Smart 3D supports native distributive systems and imported SIO routes. Throughout this document, the term "SIO route" is used as a generic way to refer to SIO pipes, HVAC ducts, cable trays, cable ways, and conduits.

  • You can place Smart 3D native supports using SIO structure, such as members, slabs, walls, plate parts, equipment, equipment components, and trenches. The software selects SIO geometry, such as planes, projections, cones, and poly-meshes, and not the entire SIO object.

  • A Smart 3D design object can be either a native object or a Smart Interop Object (SIO). Any specific differences are described in context. Both native objects and SIOs are referred to generically as "objects" throughout the help.

The Hangers and Supports task treats supports as first class modeling components. The supports are connected to piping and structural systems instead of simple graphical references. Connections enable the supports to automatically react to design changes. For example, if the size of a pipe changes, the pipe supports automatically react.

In addition to providing tools to place, modify, and delete supports, the software also includes popular support catalogs. Also, several sample standard supports configured from the vendors' catalogs are provided. If a standard support does not exist for a specific case, you can model the designed supports, one part at a time.
