The following procedure describes how to install and configure IIS and the required roles and features for the latest version of Microsoft Windows Standard Server. For details of supported versions, see Web Application Server, under Application Server Operating System.

Some steps and version numbers of software features may differ if you are installing IIS on an earlier version of Windows Server.

Select Roles and Features

  1. Go to Start and choose Server Manager.

  2. In the navigation pane, choose Dashboard and then choose Add roles and features.

  3. In the Add Roles and Features Wizard, if the Before you begin page is displayed, click Next.

  4. On the Select installation type page, click Role-based or feature-based installation, and then click Next.

  5. On the Select destination server page, click Select a server from the server pool and from the Server Pool section, choose your server.

  6. Click Next.

  7. Expand File and Storage Services > File and iSCSI Services and select File Server.

  8. Scroll down and verify that Storage Services is installed.

  9. Scroll down to the Web Server (IIS) option and do one of the following:

    • If this check box is initially cleared, select it and skip to step 11 (you will perform step 10 after completing step 20).

    • If this check box is initially only partly selected (black fill), expand it and continue to the next step.

    From this point on, where a dialog box appears prompting you to add features for any selected option, click Add Features.

  10. To choose the Web Server (IIS) roles, do the following:

    1. If visible, expand Web Server.

      This node does not appear if you access these options on the Web Server Role (IIS) > Role Services page.

    2. Expand Common HTTP Features and verify that the following options are selected:

      • Default Document

      • Directory Browsing

      • HTTP Errors

      • Static Content

    3. Select the HTTP Redirection option.

    4. Expand Health and Diagnostics and verify that the HTTP Logging option is selected.

    5. Select the following options:

      • Logging Tools

      • Request Monitor

      • Tracing

    6. Expand Performance and verify that the Static Content Compression option is selected.

    7. Select the Dynamic Content Compression option.

    8. Expand Security and verify that the Request Filtering option is selected.

    9. Select the following options:

      • Basic Authentication

      • Client Certificate Mapping Authentication

      • Digest Authentication

      • IIS Client Certificate Mapping Authentication

      • IP and Domain Restrictions

      • URL Authorization

      • Windows Authentication

    10. Expand Application Development and verify that the following options are selected:

      • .NET Extensibility 4.7

      • ASP .NET 4.7

      • ISAPI Extensions

      • ISAPI Filters

    11. Expand Management Tools and verify that the IIS Management Console option is selected.

    12. Select the IIS Management Scripts and Tools option.

  11. Click Next.

  12. On the Features page, expand .NET Framework 4.7 Features and then do the following:

    1. Verify that .NET Framework 4.7 is installed.

    2. Select ASP .NET 4.7.

    Where version numbers of features such as .NET are specified, these may differ if you are working on a different version of Windows Server.

  13. Expand WCF Services and select all the available options as follows:

    • HTTP Activation

    • Message Queuing (MSMQ) Activation

    • Named Pipe Activation

    • TCP Activation

    • TCP Port Sharing (already installed)

  14. Scroll down and expand Message Queuing > Message Queuing Services and verify that the Message Queuing Server option is selected.

  15. For Windows Server 2019, scroll down and verify that System Data Archiver and Windows Defender Antivirus are installed.

  16. Expand Windows PowerShell and verify that the following features are installed:

    • Windows PowerShell 5.1

    • Windows PowerShell 2.0 Engine

    • Windows PowerShell ISE

  17. Expand Windows Process Activation Service and verify that the following features are selected:

    • Process Model

    • Configuration APIs

  18. Scroll down and verify that WOW64 Support and XPS Viewer are installed.

  19. Click Next.

  20. Click Next (not required unless you skipped step 10).

    If you skipped step 10, go back and perform the selections now before reviewing your selections in step 21.

  21. On the Confirm installation selections page, verify that the following options were selected for installation:

    Depending on the original state of the installed roles and features, the options you see on this page may differ from those shown in the screenshots below.

  22. Click Install.

  23. On the Installation progress page, confirm that your installation completed successfully and then click Close.
