You can revise a document using either SmartPlant Foundation or the originating authoring tool. In an authoring tool, the SmartPlant > Revise command allows you to revise documents and change the revision scheme used in a project.

When you are revising a document using any revision scheme,

  • The software ensures that you cannot reserve in one configuration (such as a plant or one of the projects) a specific revision for a document that is already used in another configuration.

  • The software ensures that you cannot reserve, in a project, a revision for a document that precedes the greatest revision of that document in the project's plant, as defined by the associated revision scheme.

  • When you click Next on the Revise dialog box, the software picks the next revision value for each document, according to the above rules.

The revision scheme used in the plant is displayed as the default revision scheme.

Example

A plant has two projects: Project 1 and Project 2.

  • If you revise a document in the plant using the revision scheme RevAlpha and use the Next Major button to set the major revision to C, then SmartPlant Foundation reserves revision C for that document.

  • If you try to revise the same document in Project 1, the software ensures that you can only reserve revision D or greater.

  • If you reserve revision E in Project 1, then you can only reserve D, F, or values greater than F in Project 2.

If the Allow Skipping Revisions option is set to False in the Manage Integration Options dialog box, the software does not allow you to skip revisions across the plant and projects. Therefore, if you are not using minor revisions and skipping is not allowed, you can only reserve the next major revision in another configuration. For more information, see the Configure Allow skipping revisions.

For example, if a document is reserved with the revision A1 in the plant, no further value is available in the revision scheme for the plant, and projects have available A2, B, and B1. If the same document is then reserved with revision B in a project, the available revision numbers for other projects are A2 and B1.
