Material Editor Version
6.0 (2019)

When you create a new database, the BuildRules table is empty. Without build rules, the Material Wizard is unable to define or build up the item code, description, and SKEY data that is required by the Material Builder. To use the Material Wizard, you must first use the Material Wizard Rules Editor to create build rules. These rules are the instructions that the Material Wizard uses, along with list tables, to assist in the automatic creation of item code, description, and SKEY data for new materials.

Material Wizard Rules Editor Dialog Box Options

View List Tables Icon View List Tables

Displays all of the list tables available in the current database. To add a list table to the build rule, click it in the tree view and then click Use List Table.

Material Wizard Material Wizard

Opens the Material Wizard dialog box using the rules that you are defining in the Material Wizard Rules Editor dialog box. You can use this option to test the build rules you are defining.

Copy Build Rules Icon Copy Build Rules

Copies the selected build rule.

Paste Build Rules Icon Paste Build Rules

Pastes the build rule to the selected item group or component type.

You cannot copy and paste a build rule defined for an item group to a component type, nor can you copy and paste a build rule defined for a component type to an item group.

General Tab

Allows you to define rules that are applicable to every material that you create using the Material Wizard.

Fixed length fields

Uses the longest ShortName value within the selected list table. This option impacts how the Material Wizard builds up the item code. If you check Fixed length fields, the Material Wizard pads any ShortName values that are shorter than the longest ShortName to the appropriate length using the character specified in the Padding character box. If you do not check Fixed length fields, the Material Wizard builds up the item code using the length of the ShortName as it is found in each row of the selected list table.

Free format field

Provides the option to add characters at the end of the item code after you have made the required selections in the Material definition string in the Material Wizard dialog box. If you check the Free format field option, you must type a value in the Length box that defines how long the free format field is to be.

Part description separator

Specifies that each LongName in the material description is delimited. As you select items in the Material definition string, the Material Wizard uses the corresponding LongName to build up the description. You can choose to have each LongName in the description delimited by any number of characters. In the following example, the delimiter in the material description is a comma followed by a space:

PIPE, CS/ZN DIP A53 WLD, GRD B, STD WT

Maximum description length

Define the maximum length allowed for a description. The default value is 50 characters.

Component Tab

Allows you to define build rules for each component type. You can also define build rules for item groups.

When you define build rules for an item group, the Material Wizard applies those rules to all the component types within that group except for those component types that have their own build rules. In those cases, the build rules defined for the component type override the build rules defined for the item group to which it belongs.

Materials tree view

Displays the item groups and component types in a tree view format. The Material Wizard Rules Editor uses the SPMatEd ICON Script icon to signify that build rules exist for an item group or component type.

Tree View with Build Rules

Item code prefix

Type the item code prefix. The Material Wizard places the prefix as the first character of the item code.

Description prefix

Type the description prefix. The Material Wizard places the prefix as the first character of the material description

SKEY

Type the Isogen symbol key (SKEY) value.

List table

Specify the list tables the Material Wizard is to use to build up the item code, description and SKEY for a new material. The order in which you select the list tables (and thus the order in which they appear in the grid), defines the order in which the Material Wizard builds up the item code and description (using your selections when creating the Material definition string). The Material Wizard uses the ShortName to build up the item code and the LongName to build up the material description.

Add Description Separator

Specify whether the Material Wizard is to use the Part description character defined on the General tab after making a selection from the list table in the Material Wizard. The default setting is Yes.
