Materials are only one aspect of a specification or catalog. Another equally important aspect is the reference table. Two types of reference tables are delivered with Material Editor, a standard set of tables, referred to as standard reference tables, and list tables.

Standard reference tables are used by Smart Isometrics to determine material selection given a specific set of circumstances, such as bore size, bend angle, and so on. List tables, however, are used only by Material Editor in conjunction with the build rules to assist in the automatic generation of item codes, descriptions, and SKEYs when using the Material Builder to create new materials.

The standard reference tables listed below are included in the ReferenceDataTemplate.mdb file delivered with the software.

Reference Table

Purpose

BendSelect

Controls the assignment of bends and elbows based on bore size and angle.

BranchSelect

Determines which branch component type to use based on bore size and type.

BoltSelect

Controls the assignment of bolts and defines the quantity to use for a specific item code.

DefaultChoice

Defines which item code to use given a specific component type.

FlangeSelect

Controls the assignment of first choice and second choice flanges based on bore size.

ValveSelect

Controls the assignment of valves based on bore size.

Category

Defines the category (fabrication, erection, or offshore) that is assigned when a component is placed in Smart Isometrics.

EndConnection

Defines the category (fabrication, erection, or offshore) that is assigned when a component is placed in Smart Isometrics.

MinimumTubeLength

Controls the check minimum tube lengths function in Smart Isometrics.

Although the reference tables are always present when you create a new database, they are usually empty.

You can view the reference tables in the current database by selecting the Reference Tables tab on the Database window. The Reference list displays a tree view: one node contains the standard reference tables and the other node contains list tables. Both types of tables are further subdivided into folders that you can open and close to view their contents. However, the Reference Tables tab only allows you to view reference tables and their associated data. To create and modify reference tables and folders, you must use the Reference Table Manager. The Reference Table Manager enables you to add new records to a reference table or edit the existing data. You can also delete records from a reference table.
