This procedure shows you how to define a symbol that has already been created in Catalog Manager, with an item type and document type. The settings that you make in this window apply to both conventional and composite drawings.

  1. Select Options > Item Type Symbology > Define to open the Define Item Type Symbology window.

  2. From the Item type list, select the item type you want to define a symbol for.

  3. From the Drawing type list, select the type of drawing where the symbol will be used, for example single line diagram, cable block diagram, wiring diagram, or PDB layout drawing.

  4. To narrow down the item type to specific item type properties that the symbol will used with, do the following:

    1. Under Item Type Filter, select the ellipsis to open the Select Filter dialog.

    2. Define the filter as you require.

  5. To narrow down the drawing type to specific drawing properties, do the following:

    1. Under Drawing Type Filter, select the ellipsis to open the Select Filter dialog.

    2. Define the filter as you require.

  6. Under Symbol File, select on the cell and choose the symbol file you want to use.

  7. Under Initial Style, from the list choose a style.

The Color, Width, and Pattern cells are filled with the default settings of the selected style.

  8. You can change the Color, Width, and Pattern, by selecting in their cells and choosing from the list the required value. The styles default setting will not be affected by these changes.

  9. Use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to move the row higher or lower. The higher the row is positioned, the higher the priority. The priority rules are set by the filter. The priority determines which rule applies first when rules conflict with each other. For example, filter A is the first row. The filter's rules state to use a red broken line to represent cables that are between 2 to 10 cm in diameter. Filter B is below filter A in the Define Item Type Symbology window and its rules state to use a blue continuous line when the cable is between 8 to 20 cm in diameter. If a cable is 9 cm in diameter the software assigns to the cable the symbol with the higher priority, in this case a red broken line.

  10. Close the Define Item Type Symbology window when you have completed defining symbols for the selected item type.
