If multiple naming conventions exist for an item type, you can specify convention priorities. A convention priority enables the software to apply a specific naming convention on creating a new item tag belonging to the item type.

Convention priorities determine the order in which the software can apply multiple naming conventions to new item tags. The software automatically assigns a priority number to each new convention label that you create. The convention label created first receives the highest priority (the highest priority number is 1). Each additional label receives a lower priority. You can change the order of priorities at any stage of your plant life-cycle.

The following example describes how the software applies priorities when a user creates an item tag in Smart Electrical. For the Cable item type, you can create a naming convention with priority 1 (the highest) for power cables, for example, NC1, and also create another naming convention with priority 2 for control cables, for example, NC2. Then you can assign to NC1 a filter with the property Cable Category=Power and to NC2 a filter with the property Cable Category=Control.

Depending on an item tag that the user creates in Smart Electrical, the software applies the naming conventions as follows:

  • When creating a power cable, the software first validates the filter conditions for the naming convention NC1, which has the highest priority, and creates the new item tag using the naming conventions defined for the NC1.

  • When creating a control cable, the software first checks the filter conditions for the naming convention NC1. Because the filter conditions do not fit control cables, the software applies the filter conditions for the naming convention NC2, which has the lower priority, and creates the new item tag using the naming conventions defined for the NC2. You can change the order of priorities at any stage of your plant life-cycle.
