You can assign an optional naming convention for each Smart Electrical item type. In Smart Electrical, naming conventions consist of a number of segments, with each segment being a text string or the value of a property of the item type. You define segments as protected segments or allow users to modify the segments as needed. If you define a text segment as a protected segment, you can use this segment as a separator. See Naming Convention Example.

You can either define or copy a naming convention per item type - alternatively, you can copy naming conventions for the entire plant group that you select. When copying naming conventions, you can use a reference plant group as a source. Prior to defining or copying naming conventions, you must select a target plant group, for example Plant1, Area1, Unit1, and so forth. Source and target plant groups must belong to the same plant group type. For example, if your target plant group is a unit, your source plant group must be a unit too.

Also, for item types that support multiple naming conventions, you can specify several naming convention properties and assign a filter to each convention label (you need to access Filter Manager to select or create filters). When working with multiple naming conventions, you need to specify the order of priorities. When a user creates an item tag in Smart Electrical, the software applies naming conventions in the specified order of priorities.

We recommend that you do not change a naming convention which is already in use. Naming conventions do not apply to existing items. If you change an existing naming convention, the software applies the new convention only to new item tags that users create in Smart Electrical. This means that after you change a naming convention which was already used when creating item tags, new item tags might be not unique in a plant group.

If you do need to change a naming convention which is in use, in Smart Electrical, for the appropriate item tags, it is advisable that users change the Comply with Naming Conventions flag to False and then switch it back to True. This way the software can update the names of the existing item tags.

When opening Options Manager, you might see a message informing you that changes were made to the plant group hierarchy names. These changes were made in .Smart Engineering Manager To complete the name changes the Apply Naming Conventions command must be run in Smart Electrical. This message continues to appear each time you open Options Manager, until the Apply Naming Conventions command is run, or you select the Don't remind me again of these changes check box.
