Each server in an integrated environment, including all authoring tool servers and the application server, should have a routine backup plan, with full system backups occurring at regular intervals and incremental backups occurring more frequently. Mission critical servers, such as the application server, should be given special consideration, such as continuous hardware backup, uninterruptible power supply, RAID, and mirroring.
In addition to these regular backups, we also recommend that the entire integrated environment be backed up at a consistent known state, such as the beginning and end of a project, and any major project milestones. While enterprise-wide backups are not practical for everyday operations, they provide the greatest insurance that data can be recovered completely with all project history intact.
