Edit > Find > Find Object

Searches for objects in a display set that match criteria that you specify. The search query can include a combination of the display list criteria, data criteria, graphic criteria, graphic volume (area), and individual objects. The Find operation provides you with the ability to continue working as you search for objects. For example, as you use the 3D navigation controls to fly through your model, or move display sets, or play an animation, you can use Find Object without interruption. You can access Find Object from the menu, CTRL+F, and right-clicking on a display set in the Project Manager.

When you open the Find Object dialog box, all display sets available in the model can be selected and used as queries. The query or search criteria for a display set is referred to as its definition. To set up or change a definition for a display set, see Edit a Display Set Definition for more information.

In addition to the display set queries, you can create your own custom search.

If you unload a .vue file in an .svf project that contains graphic objects currently in the Find Object results, those results are cleared and reset.

Find Object Using a Display Set

Before you begin, you can use the Edit > Select Settings command to set up the Select and Highlight display for objects. Objects located in a search are automatically selected. For more information, see Configure Highlight and Color Options.

  1. Click Edit > Find > Find Object.

You can also click Find Object on the Tools MiniBar or press Ctrl+F.

  2. (Optional) To set advanced search options, click Hide/Show Details to expand the Find Object dialog box.

  3. (Optional) To control the display results of the search, set Fit, Show, and Render. See Dialog BoxFind Object Dialog Box for a description of each dialog box option.

  4. On the Find Object dialog box, select a display set from the menu list.

The software shows all display sets that have been created in the model.

Smart Review automatically takes you to the first object it locates based on the query.

  5. Use Previous and Next to look at each of the found objects. The current object becomes the selected object. You can then use commands such as Fit on the object.

  • Press SHIFT+N (Next) and SHIFT+P (Previous) to look at located objects.

  • For multiple selection, use CTRLwith Previous or Next to add the current object to the other selected objects in a cumulative fashion.

  • The number of objects found is listed in the Total field. Each object is numbered for search reference purposes. The object numbers do not relate to their property ID numbers.

  • If the Allow fly-to behaviors option is not set (Motion menu > Settings > Display tab), you can double-click Previous or Next to immediately jump to the located object instead of going through fly mode.

  • Press ESC or close the Find Object dialog box to hide it, and return the Main view to its normal display. You can still use SHIFT+N (Next) and SHIFT+P (Previous) to find objects based on the last query.

  • When you start a query, the model display changes to a gray, slightly transparent color for the non-query objects so that you can easily see the query objects.

  1. Close the Find Object dialog box when you have finished. When the Find Object dialog box is closed, you can still scroll through the objects located in the last search using Next Object and Previous Object in the Edit menu.

Create a Custom Search Query

  1. Click Edit > Find > Find Object.

  2. Click Hide/Show Details to expand the Find Object dialog box and set advanced search options.

  3. Set Fit, Show, and Render options to control the display results of your search. See Dialog BoxFind Object Dialog Box for a description of each dialog box option.

  4. With <Custom> displaying in the name field, click Next to open the Edit Definition dialog box.

  5. To start setting the search criteria, click Insert.

Display set definition strings are limited to 32K. If the display set definition character limit is exceeded, then a warning message displays in the Text window.

  6. Click either the FIND or FIND ALL BUT operator.

  7. Select the definition type.

  8. Set the parameters for the selected type. The example below shows Levels being set.

  9. On the Edit Definition dialog box, click OK when you have finished defining your query.

The Edit Position dialog box closes, and Smart Review automatically takes you to the first object it locates based on the query.

The number of objects found is listed in the Total field. Each object is numbered for search reference purposes. The object numbers do not relate to their property ID numbers.

  10. Use the Previous and Next buttons to look at each of the objects found in the query.

  11. Close the Find Object dialog box when you have finished.
