Item types can belong to only one plant group type, for example to the 'Unit' type. Therefore, when you specify the target plant group and select to define naming conventions per item type, the software filters the Item type list accordingly. For example, if you associated power distribution boards with the plant group type 'Plant', the Power Distribution Board item type only appears in the list of item types when your target plant group is a specific plant.

The following example illustrates a 16-character naming convention for cables:

  • a prefix 'C'

  • a separator '-'

  • the cable specification

  • a separator '/'

  • a unique identifier

  • a separator '/'

  • a free text segment of up to 3 characters that has default value XYZ

For this naming convention, you should define the individual segments as shown:

Naming_Conv_Example

  • If you do not define a naming convention for an item type, the software assigns a default naming convention to all the item tags belonging to this item type. The default naming convention consists of an item type identifier and the item tag last sequence number. For example, for a motor, the default naming convention is M-1. You define the item type identifier and last sequence number values in the Item Types window.

  • For reference items that appear in the Reference Data Explorer in SmartPlant Electrical, the software always uses the default naming conventions.
