  1. Compile custom symbols to create a .dll for each symbol. You can create symbols using Visual Basic 6, .NET, or Visual C++. For more information, see Move custom .dlls to SharedContent folder.

  2. In Windows Explorer, locate the SharedContent folder on the reference data computer.

    • In the Address bar, the path must be in the form of a Universal Naming Convention (UNC). A standard UNC path uses double slashes or double back slashes preceding the name of the computer. For example, \\\SharedContent, where \\ is the reference data computer name.

    • If you are running Oracle on Linux, the SharedContent folder must be on a Windows-based computer.

  3. If you are creating the symbol mapping file for the first time, add a folder under the SharedContent folder called Custom Symbols.

  4. Copy the symbol .dll files into the Custom Symbols folder. You can organize the symbols as needed, with or without sub-folders.

  5. In Project Management, select a catalog that uses the SharedContent folder where your custom .dlls are located.

  6. Click Tools > Update Custom Symbol Configuration to open the Update Custom Symbol Configuration Dialog.

  7. Click Start to begin processing.

When processing finishes, the status bar shows the status of the process as "Successfully updated the custom symbols configuration file."

  8. If there are duplicate ProgIDs, select the .dll to use for each duplicate, and then click Update.

  9. Click Close.

If the software finds duplicate ProgIDs between existing symbols in the reference data and symbols in the Custom Symbols folder, the Update Custom Symbol Configuration Dialog displays.
