The POD Compare function enables you to compare the contents between two pipelines. You can verify that information such as weld numbers are the same.

The software can compare the contents of the following:

  • The current open pipeline and any previous version of the pipeline from the project database.

  • The current open pipeline and a different pipeline from the project database.

When you load two pipelines for comparison, the software displays the results of the POD comparison process in the POD Comparison window. The POD Comparison window is divided into two main sections: a 3D view of each file being compared (1) and a data-oriented view of the files being compared (2 and 3):

  • While the POD Comparison window is open, you can switch back to the Graphics window and continue editing.

  • If either file being compared changes, the software automatically recalculates the comparison and updates the display in the POD Comparison window with the new file contents. For example, if you edit the pipeline in the Graphics window and save your changes, the POD Comparison window updates to display those changes.

1 - 3D View Panels

Displays the files being compared. Each file displays in its own 3D view panel. The software uses color to show how the components in one file compare (File 1) to those in the other file (File 2).

Component Color

Purpose

Gray

Identifies components that are identical in the two files being compared.

Green

Identifies new components. That is, the components only exist in File 2.

Blue

Identifies deleted components. That is, the components only exist in File 1.

Yellow

Identifies components that have different attribute values but identical coordinates.

Dark Orange/Red

Identifies components that have identical attribute values but different coordinates.

Light Orange

Identifies components that have different attribute values and different coordinates.

The 3D views are synchronized so that whenever the viewpoint in one of the 3D view panels changes, the software updates the viewpoint in the other 3D view panel to match. Splitter bars below and between the 3D view panels allow you to adjust the proportions of each view panel.

You can manipulate the 3D views and orient the display of the pipeline using the commands available on the shortcut menu.

To display the shortcut menu, right-click anywhere in either of the 3D view panels.

Fit View

Zooms the current view to show entire file is shown. Because the software synchronizes the view, the view in the other 3D view panel is set to the same viewpoint. If the other file has larger or different boundaries, then the file might not be completely in view.

Fit View to Selection

Zooms the current view to contain all currently selected components that exist in the file.

Depending on their location, selected components in the other file might not be within view.

Center View on Selection

Moves the center of the current view so that it is at the center of the currently selected component. If you select multiple components, the view center lies somewhere between them. Because the software synchronizes the views, selected components might not show, depending on their location.

Standard View

Sets the view direction to one of the following standard orthogonal and isometric orientations:

Iso North: Top Left

Iso North: Top Right

Iso North: Bottom Left

Iso North: Bottom Right

Representation

Switches the view of the pipeline between Solid and Symbolic representations. The Solid representation displays a more three-dimensional view of the pipeline; the Symbolic representation displays a line-based view of the pipeline.

You can also use the mouse to manipulate the display in the 3D view panels:

Mouse/Key Action

Result

Hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse.

Rotates the view.

Hold down the middle mouse button/wheel and drag the mouse.

Pans the view.

Press SHIFT, hold down the left mouse button, and drag the mouse.

Zooms the view.

Press CTRL, hold down the left mouse button, and drag the mouse.

Rotates the view about an alternate set of axes.

2 - Tree View

Shows the structure of the files. When you select a component in the tree view, the software highlights the corresponding component in the 3D view panels.

3 - List View

Shows a comparison of the data items immediately below the currently selected item in the tree view. For example, if you select a set of attributes in the tree, the list view displays a list of the attributes showing which have changed. Double-clicking an item in the list view also selects it.

  • The tree and list views use a simpler color scheme than the 3D view.

    • Black text - No change

    • Green text - New items (in File 2 only)

    • Blue text - Deleted items (in File 1 only)

    • Red text - An item is in some way different, either because it is different in itself or because it has new/deleted/changed child items.

  • The splitter bar between the tree and list views allows you to adjust their relative sizes.

Log file

You can write a summary of the comparison to a log file. The log file contains a comparison of the POD and pipeline attributes in the two files and a summary of the data in each pipeline. This summary includes run and end point counts, counts of each type of component, centerline lengths for each run, and a count of the number of components that are new, deleted, or changed.
