  1. Place the .zvf and .xml files that you previously exported in to an accessible folder. The recommended location is in the SharedContent folder (for example, [Product Folder]:\3DRefData\SharedContent\Reference3D).

  2. In the Project Management tree, select the model to attach as the reference model.

  3. Click Database > New > Reference 3D Model Command to open the New Reference 3D Model Dialog. If the model currently has a R3D referenced object attached, you can also right-click the Reference 3D Models root in the Project Management tree, and then click New Reference 3D Model in the shortcut menu.

  4. Define model information in the boxes.

    • Use a name that is related to the files being referenced.

    • When browsing for files, you must use a UNC path.

    • The UNC path and file name cannot contain the single quote character ( ' ).

  5. Click OK.

The software begins the referencing process and displays an informational progress message. When the process finishes, the referenced project displays as a new item under the Reference 3D Models node.

Updating the Reference 3D or the CustomReference3D schema packages causes other Reference 3D models which are attached to any Smart 3D models that use the same catalog database to be displayed as out-of-date. A Reference 3D model can also become out-of-date if any of the input files in the Reference 3D folder are updated. The following example shows the icon displayed in the Project Management tree for an out-of-date Reference 3D model:

  6. Review the import log file in the %temp% folder.

  7. Start a new Smart 3D session or save and reopen an existing session to see the new Reference 3D model graphics. For further modifications, you can refresh the workspace to see any updated objects and data.

If you save a session file with a filter that allows excluded objects in the workspace, you must refresh the workspace when you re-open the session file. Otherwise, you cannot select excluded objects.
