Failure of the production server can be detected manually (for example, through a support call from a user who is unable to access the system), but ideally this should be automated. This is done by an automated script that polls the system at regular intervals by logging in to the web interface which triggers an alert if the system is not available for a certain interval. Many enterprise tools support this kind of monitoring.
