Failure of the production server can be detected manually, for example through a support call from a user who is unable to access the system, but ideally this should be automated. This can be done by an automated script that polls the system at regular intervals by logging in to the web interface and triggers an alert if the system is not available for a certain interval. Many enterprise tools are available that support this kind of monitoring.
