The term "workflow" describes a sequence of states through which a piece of work (e.g. task, action, log, permit) passes from initiation to completion. Workflow is performed by a team of people (e.g. operator, supervisor, manager), and can include various processes (e.g. industrial, administrative). For example, an Action can be created by a Manager, completed by an Operator, and approved by a Supervisor. This example is illustrated below by 3 state boxes and arrows indicating the direction of flow.
Workflow can be represented in various ways. One of the most widely adopted workflow notations is Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN), which the j5 system uses to define workflow. This documentation will introduce BPMN, the installation of BPMN editing tools, and the integration of BPMN with j5.
