Create a customized environment for any Sketch 2D operation by storing various settings (such as units of measure, color, and dimensions) in the 3D session file to customize your environment each time you open a sketch. This allows you to configure Sketch 2D settings for the Sketch environment.

When this command is selected, your personal settings values override all previous settings values. For example, if you are working in meters and open a Sketch 2D document that was saved by a user who was working in millimeters, your Sketch 2D units of measure still display in meters.

Use Sketch 2D Personal Settings reads the units of measure from the 3D environment if it cannot find any units in the personal settings from the 3D session file.

You can change your personal settings by changing a value during a Sketch session. When you save the Sketch 2D session, this new setting value becomes your default Sketch 2D value for any new Sketch 2D opened during the current 3D session. For example, if your primary dimension distance value is in feet, and you change this to inches, any future sketches have the primary dimension distance as inches. The software stores and saves these changes in the 3D session file.

When you are in a new session and select Use Sketch2D Personal Settings to apply your personal settings, Sketch 2D looks for the Sketch2DPersonalSettings.xml file. The software looks first in the same folder as the session file and then in the [Shared Content Folder]\XML\Settings folder. This file contains no settings at installation so that SmartSketch Drawing Editor does not overwrite any of your Sketch 2D settings when you first run Use Sketch 2D Personal Settings.

After you have configured your Sketch 2D environment with all your preferred settings, you can create a new Sketch2DPersonalSettings.xml file with Save Sketch2D Personal Settings to XML File. When you replace the existing Sketch2DPersonalSettings.xml file with a new file, the first new Sketch 2D session in any new 3D session automatically displays your preferred settings.

You can also load this .xml file with Load Sketch2D Personal Settings From XML file at any time to apply your preferred settings in your current Sketch 2D session.

SHARED Tip When you need different settings for different Sketch 2D sessions, you can save a different .xml file for each type of Sketch2D session and then load the specific .xml file as needed. For example, you might need a Sketch2D session in millimeters with a yellow background and dimension text size of 30mm for placing openings. You can configure the settings in Sketch2D and save them as MyOpeningsSettings.xml using Save Sketch2D Personal Settings to XML File. Then, for each new Sketch2D opening session, load these values with Load Sketch2D Personal Setting From XML file. At the same time, if you need a Sketch2D session in meters with a dimension text size of 30cm for placing walls, configure these settings in Sketch2D and then save these to another file, such as MyWallsSettings.xml. Then, load this file for each new Sketch2D wall session.

A second file called SketchSettingsTemplate.xml is delivered in the same [Shared Content Folder]\XML\Settings location. This .xml file provides a template of all possible settings that can be saved with Load Sketch2D Personal Setttings From XML file. The delivered file is empty so that only the default settings (Dimension Properties, Colors, Toolbars, Units, and Layers) are saved in a new .xml file.

The software delivers sample files EnglishDecimalExample.xml, EnglishFractionalExample.xml, MetricDecimalUnitsExample.xml to the [Shared Content Folder]\XML\Settings folder with some predefined settings. You can load these .xml files to determine whether these basic settings meet your needs.

For more information on the stored settings, see:

  • Sketch 2D personal settings are stored in the session file in customizable .xml format.

  • You do not have to edit the .xml files provided with the product to customize your environment. Turning on Use Sketch2D Personal Settings and then setting values such as units, colors, layers, and so on in the 2D environment is enough to customize all future Sketches after the session file is saved.

  • You can customize your .xml file to keep only a small number of settings. When you save the 3D session, SmartSketch Drawing Editor saves all of the available Sketch 2D settings as well as the settings the editor loads from your .xml file.

SHARED Tip You can turn off Use Sketch2D Personal Settings and turn it on again to reload the units of measure from the 3D settings without leaving Sketch2D.
