The following applies if you are using a version of the software before Update 34. For the latest information, see Configure viewing of Hexagon drawings or models.

Users can view Hexagon 2D drawings and 3D models without any additional software installed on their client computers. To do so, WebGL viewer files are generated from the Hexagon 2D drawings and 3D models, as follows:

  • Hexagon 2D drawings - .vecz file types

  • Hexagon 3D models - .binz file types

  • It may take longer to open a 3D model the first time it is opened. To make the viewing process quicker, a configuration setting, CacheModelOnCreate, is available in the site settings node. For more information, see Site Settings node properties.

  • The following MicroStation files can also be viewed in a web browser without additional software installed on client computers or additional configuration beyond the tasks in this section: MicroStation V8 .dgn files and MicroStation .dwg files that contain proxy objects. However, additional software must be installed on the server computer. For more information, see Set up the SmartPlant Foundation File Server for WebGL viewer file display (retired).

For this to work, you must:

  1. Set up both the SmartPlant Foundation File Server and the SmartPlant Foundation Application Server so that the WebGL viewer files can be displayed. For instructions, see:

  2. Use the Desktop Client to configure WebGL viewer files to be generated automatically. For instructions, see Enable automatic generation of WebGL viewer files for Hexagon 2D and 3D files (retired).

After you complete this configuration, WebGL viewer files will be automatically generated anytime Hexagon 2D or 3D files are published to or stored in the database.

  3. If there were already Hexagon 2D or 3D files published to or stored in the database before you configured the software, you must manually generate the WebGL viewer files for those files. You can generate in batch using the Create Renditions in Batch command. For more information, see CreateRenditionsInBatch client API and Create and view batch renditions. For instructions, see Manually generate WebGL viewer files for Hexagon 2D and 3D files already in the database (retired).

  4. Check the combination of hardware, software, and browser settings on client computers to make sure they can display WebGL viewer files. For instructions, see Configure client computers to display WebGL viewer files (retired).
