You can replace elbows on the isometric drawing with pulled bends. The conversion of elbows to pulled (pipe) bends is based on a set of project-specific rules that you define in I-Configure. The project-specific ElbowConversion data stored in I-Configure specifies which of the possible elbows are candidates for conversion. The sample ElbowConversion.xml file delivered with the software contains the following rules:

  • A / B - 90-degree butt weld elbows, between 0" and 8", 1D and 1.5D radius are candidates for conversion. Replace with pulled bend with the same radius.

  • C / D - 90-degree compression elbows, between 0" and 2", any radius are candidates for conversion. Replace with a 1.5D pulled bend. Convert adjacent couplings or fixed pipe to pipe.

After identifying which elbows meet the conversion criteria, the software next determines whether the conversion is feasible, given the location of the elbow in the pipe. The ElbowConversion.xml file also specifies the constraints imposed by the practicalities of bending the pipe. Consider the following from the sample ElbowConversion.xml file:

  • The TANGENT attribute is the minimum length required for a single pulled bend to be pulled in a bending machine.

  • The ADJACENT attribute is the minimum length required for two adjacent bends to fit into a bending machine. If the ADJACENT - JOINED attribute in the <CONTROLS> tag is set, then this value is the minimum for two pulled bends which are joined with a weld.

  • The SINGLE - ADD - ON attribute is the additional length to be added to the pulled bend to get past ovality on the pipe when the ADJACENT - JOINED attribute is set to Yes.

  1. Click Change Elbows to Bends on the Tools toolbar.

The Convert Elbows to Pulled Bends dialog box displays.

  2. Select the appropriate options, and then click OK.

After the conversion process completes, the software lists those elbows it is unable to convert in the Elbow Conversion Errors dialog box.

  3. To review an error, select it from the list. The software highlights the elbow to which that error applies in the Graphics window.

  4. After you finish reviewing the errors, click OK to close the dialog box.

When converting elbows to bends, you must set Cut Pieces > Cut Length Calculations > Data > Use Tangent Data to True in Isogen Configuration. Otherwise, there is a possibility of getting an incorrect cut length output on the isometric and in the cut list report file. For more information about defining property data, see Isogen Configuration User's Guide, available using the Help > Printable Guides command in the software.
