Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) feature is used to automatically select the welds in a line number for inspection processes.
This feature is applicable for Fabrication Piping Module, only if Lot Management is set to false for that project.
To select the welds automatically for inspection, you must specify certain conditions in the following modules:
-
NDE Matrix
-
NDE Definition
Specify conditions in NDE definition
In this module, you can specify the conditions to select the welds for inspection.
-
Navigate to Home > Piping > NDE Definition.
-
Select the required check box for the following conditions:
-
AllWeldersWork
-
AllWPS
AllWeldersWork: If you select this condition, the welds done by different welders are selected for inspection.
For example, if you need to select three welds according to the conditions specified in NDE Matrix, then the welds W1, W2 and W4 are selected for inspection from the table below. Weld W3 is not selected as it is already done by welder 1.

Welder 2 |
AllWPS: If you select this condition, the welds done using different weld procedures (WPS) are selected for inspection.
For example, if you need to select two welds according to the conditions specified in NDE Matrix, then the welds W1 and W4 are selected for inspection from the table below. Welds W2 and W3 are not selected as they have the same weld procedure as W1.

If you select both conditions AllWeldersWork and AllWPS, the welds done by different welders and the welds done using different weld procedures (WPS) are selected for inspection.
For example, from the above two tables, if you need to select four welds according to the conditions specified in NDE Matrix, then the welds W1, W2, W3 and W4 are selected for inspection. Where, W1, W2 and W4 are selected to satisfy the conditions in the NDE definition.
-
If you do not select any conditions in the NDE definition and specify two welds to select in the NDE Matrix, then any two welds are selected for inspection randomly.
Apply Non-Destructive Examination
-
Click Home > Piping > Welds.
-
Click Apply NDE .
If NDE is applied without selecting any conditions in NDE Definition module, the following message appears.
Click OK to select random welds for inspection, or click Cancel and specify the conditions for the weld in NDE definition module, and define weld percentages in the NDE Matrix.
Example
The below tables and use cases explains how the software selects welds using the weld
percentages defined in NDE matrix and conditions specified in NDE Definition.

Use case 1
In the NDE Matrix, if you assign 50% of the welds for VIS NDT, and select only ALLWeldersWork condition in the NDE definition, then the welds selected for NDE based on the above tables are W1, W2, W4, W6 and W9.
In this case, minimum five welds are selected. If there are more than five welders for a particular material and weld type combination, then the software considers all the welds done by different welders.
The selected welds are marked as Yes in their respective IsNDTrequired (NDT can be any test, such as, HDT, UT, and so forth) fields.
Use case 2
In the NDE Matrix, if you assign 50% of the welds for VIS NDT, and select only ALLWPS condition in the NDE definition, then the welds selected for NDE based on the above tables are W1, W3, and any other three welds.
In this case, five welds need to be selected, but only two welds are available with different weld procedures. So, the welds W1 and W3 are selected for NDE based on the above table. The remaining three welds are selected randomly.
The selected welds are marked as Yes in the respective IsNDTrequired (NDT can be any test, such as, HDT, UT, and so forth) fields.
Use case 3
In the NDE Matrix, if you assign 50% of the welds for VIS NDT, and select both ALLWeldersWork and ALLWPS conditions in NDE definition, then the welds selected for NDE based on the above tables are W1, W2, W4, W6, W9 and W3.
In this case, the five welds W1, W2, W4, W6 and W9 are selected based on ALLWeldersWork condition and W3 is selected based on ALLWPS condition.
The selected welds are marked as Yes in the respective IsNDTrequired (NDT can be any test, such as, HDT, UT, and so forth) fields.
Use case 4
In the NDE Matrix, if you assign 50% of the welds for VIS NDT, and do not select any conditions in NDE definition, then any five random welds are selected for NDE from the list of welds table. While selecting random welds, first preference is given to the welds for which the pipe diameter is least.
