The process of creating a Display Set animation is simply capturing display set motion by using either dynamic methods such as drag-and-drop, or the static, more precise method of editing settings in the Edit Display Set Position dialog box. The steps below describe how to create a Display Set animation using the drag-and-drop method. For more information on the available methods dynamic and static methods to move display sets, see Change a Display Set Position.

Getting Started Tips

  • By default, the start and end times are set to the current time when you start creating an animation.

  • The Status Bar also displays the animation state and time (and frame) for animations.

  • Open the Animation toolbar (View > Toolbars > Animation) which contains commands that are required or frequently used in the creation, edit, playback, and scheduling processes. For command descriptions, see Animation Toolbar.

  • To check elevation as you move your display set objects, you can use the Elevation view as well as the status bar. You can also use the Animation > Display Sets > Lock Elevation command to restrict the display set movement at a specific elevation.

  • Define or create the display sets that you want to move. You can create a display set from selected objects or by creating a query that defines the objects you want in a display set. For more information, see Create New Display Set Definitions.

  • If you know the start and end dates for the animation, you can go ahead and set these. You can use either the Common Animation Playback/Capture Settings or the Sequencer to do this. For more information on using Animation Settings, see Common Playback/Capture Settings. For the Sequencer, see Set Time Block Start and End Times.

  • You can use the Properties dialog box (View > Properties) to see information such as location, time, and display set name for animation points, paths, and display sets.

  • If you have the Construction module installed, you can place volume annotations that could represent target areas in your plant. For more information, see Place a Volume Annotation.

  1. Click Select Filter > Display Sets.

Use commands such as Assign Material or Shade to define the appearance of the display set.

  2. Click Animation > Playback/Capture Settings > Common and set the Start and End time of the animation.

You can also use the Animation Sequencer to set the animation time:

    1. Click Animation > Sequencer to open the Sequencer.

    2. In the time area pane, click under the date where you want to start the animation. The vertical bar automatically moves to that date.

    3. Click Set Start on the Sequencer toolbar.

    4. Click under the date you want to end the animation, and click Set End .

Smart Review automatically sets these dates in the Animation Playback/Capture Settings > Common page.

  3. Click Animation > Display Sets > Capture .

  4. Click on the display set to move in the Project Manager or Main view.

By default, the display paths are enabled so that they display as you create the animation. To turn on and off the path display, click Animation > Display Sets > Display Paths .

  5. To make sure display set motion is enabled, click Motion > [Display Set Name].

  6. Click the display set again.

Smart Review changes the mouse cursor and automatically surrounds the display set with a range box to show that you are in drag-and-drop mode.

If you have the animation path display turned on, then a line displays showing the path as it is being created between each point.

  7. Hold the mouse button down and drag the display set to the first point in your animation path. A user-defined point in an animation path represents a positional change or an indication of a date or time change.

To change the rotation of a display set, press and hold ALT and move the mouse. This does not change the location. The display set rotates along the longest two axes that are in the Main view.

    • Make sure the range box surrounds the display set when you use the ALT key to rotate.

    • For more precise positioning, you can use the Num Lock key pad motion controls. For more information, see Use the Keyboard.

As you hold down the left mouse button to drag, a transparent volume box is drawn from the start point to the current drag point. The three colors on the box coincide with the colors on the view axis and on the Lock command buttons on the Animation toolbar. The north coordinate face on the box is green; the east coordinate face is red, and the elevation coordinate face is blue. You can also see the animation path as you move the display set. The animation path along with the motion color scheme help you see the position and direction of the display set.

  8. Click to confirm the point.

  9. Repeat step 5 to set the remaining points of your animation path. As you move the display set along your path, you can also rotate the display set as needed. To rotate a display set, press and hold ALT, and then move the display set to the new rotated position.

To prevent the display set from being moved up or down along your path, use the Animation > Display Sets > Lock Elevation command. This locks the selected display set at the current elevation.

  10. When you are at the last point of your animation, click Animation > Display Sets > Capture to uncheck the option and turn off capture mode.

Where to Go From Here

When you have completed your animation, use the Animation Player to playback or record the animation to an AVI file. See Playing Animations.

Use the Animation Sequencer to change the start and end times of all your display set animations, change their playback order, and edit the time of the points in the animation path. See Using the Animation Sequencer.
