Part data basis is a way to describe the different dimensions and graphics for a part. A gate valve, for example, can come in many different forms, with varying body shapes and types of bonnets.
In the Smart Reference Data software, a symbol .dll file constructs the geometry of the part based on a set of dimensions. The symbol.dll uses, or implements, the part data basis to create all the different gate valves. Part data basis is a codelisted attribute.
The symbol .dll for the gate valve is named SP3DGateValve.dll. It supports close to 30 types (type meaning part data basis) of gate valves. For example, it supports PDB = 2232, which is a gate valve based on the face to face dimension and offset from the valve centerline. See the gate valve graphic below.
The same symbol .dll file also supports PDB = 2256, which is a gate valve based on the face to face dimension, offset from the valve centerline, and diameter. Note that this symbol is quite different from the one above.
The part data basis concept applies to piping, HVAC, cabletray, and conduit symbols.
You can link a symbol code in the Symbol Codes grid to part data basis (PDB) information.

When the document management and part data basis features are used on a client machine for the first time, the logged in user running Smart Reference Data Plus must have administrative privileges.

If you are trying to use symbol manager for the first time, you must have write permissions to the, C:\ProgramData\Intergraph\SPRDPlus folder (This file may be hidden. Please unhide and try again).
