Defining the list of third-party commodity codes is an engineering task that is external to Smart Materials. It is highly recommended that the mapping process be completed before the Bill of Materials (BOM) data is loaded into Smart Materials, because otherwise the entire BOM would be rejected if there are unrecognized commodity codes.
Ideally the commodity codes are registered immediately, after the third-party defines them for use in the project, and typically when the material specifications are issued for use. In this way, only codes approved for the project are recorded and the workload is spread over an acceptable time frame rather than creating a peak workload.
It is recommended to create a report from Smart Materials of the codes mapped, and then perform a quality check.
