In every project, the tracking of specific events is required due to contractual and requirement reasons. These events are referred to as milestones.

Each milestone has a user-defined label that is used whenever the milestone appears on screens or reports; the descriptions are not shown there.

The milestone functionality allows you to keep track of these events and provides a variety of ways to automate this workflow. Before you are able to use this functionality, you must complete some configuration tasks, however.

Configure the milestone tracking options using the following project defaults.

  • ZP_MS_CRT (Create Req Milestones) - This parameter controls whether the system will automatically create planning items for requisitions and tagged items on requisitions. If ZP_MS_CRT is set to Y, the system will check whether a matching planning item exists when you run an MTO job on R.20.01 or when you create an engineering requisition manually on R.30.01. If it does not exist, a new planning item will be created. If ZP_MS_CRT is set to N, the system will only create links to existing planning items, but will not create new ones.

  • ZP_MS_DSEL (Date Option) - This parameter defines the date selection option. It can be set to MIN or MAX, which means selection of earliest date or latest date, respectively. This date selection is important, for example, when a requisition has been split. The parameter typically comes into effect when an attribute-based or physical derivation rule of an untyped milestone is evaluated, simply because there are potentially multiple objects which are linked with the corresponding planning item and which equally satisfy the criteria of the derivation rule.

  • ZP_MS_TRCK (Milestones Tracking) - This parameter controls whether milestone events will be tracked automatically. That is, if a date field in the database for one of these events changes, the system will automatically recalculate the milestone dates for the associated planning items based on the physical derivation rules available.

For more information about how to set the project defaults, refer to Project Defaults.

After this configuration is done, the second step is to set up the milestone labels on this screen, together with derivation rules for those labels that you want the system to track (for example, the labels for which you do not want to set the actual date manually).

In the last step, you can group milestone labels into milestone sets and assign a set to a requisition template or to a planning item. This item will then be tracked by all the milestone labels and their corresponding derivation rules that belong to this set.
