This guide describes the requirements needed to install Intergraph Smart® Instrumentation and its supporting software, the different types of set up depending on type of database and environment, and how to connect the software to your database.  Before you begin installing the software, verify that the computers on which the software components will be installed meet the requirements described in Hardware and Software Recommendations.

The following flowchart shows the steps required to install the Smart Instrumentation software and perform the initial administration tasks prior to opening Smart Instrumentation for the first time.

SHARED Tip Hover the mouse pointer over a process and click to open the appropriate topic in the help.

  • If you are working with IDEAL, you must install Smart Instrumentation Server, which requires a special serial number.  For installation details, see the Smart Instrumentation Server Installation help and the IDEAL Installation and Configuration help.

  • The driver used for printing the PDF files is included in the Smart Instrumentation installation.

Upgrading to Smart Instrumentation 13.1 from versions of Smart Instrumentation prior to Smart Instrumentation 2018 requires upgrading to SmartPlant Instrumentation 2016 SP1 first due to changes in the database structure.

After the upgrade to 2016 Service Pack 1 is completed, you must:

  1. Rebuild stored procedures and triggers for all domains.

  2. Rebuild projects in As-Built domains.

After completing the upgrade to Service Pack 1, you can then upgrade to your new version of Smart Instrumentation.

As-Built

After upgrading SmartPlant Instrumentation versions prior to 2016 Service Pack 1, in the As-Built domains, only the claimed root items display the Claimed Item icon Claimed arrow1 in the Domain Explorer. Child items, for example a terminal strip, that in previous versions displayed the Claimed Item icon no longer display this icon after upgrade.

Oracle users, when upgrading from SmartPlant Instrumentation 2016 SP1 to Smart Instrumentation 13.1 must have both Oracle server 64-bit and Oracle client 64-bit installed as well as the 32-bit Oracle client. This is because certain functions such as backup and upgrade now use 64-bit client database components, while the 32-bit client is required for running Smart Instrumentation.

Third Party Software Installation

Third party software such as CAD package and report generator such as InfoMaker can be installed at any location on the network or local stations.  The drives (local or network mapped) on which these packages are installed require read/write access for the stations that are configured to use them.
