This dialog enables you to calculate the maximum permissible length of a thermowell inserted into a pipe. The calculation is based on the maximum frequency that the thermowell can withstand. After Smart Instrumentation displays the calculation results, you can return to this dialog, enter different settings, and then recalculate thermowell length.
The calculation complies with the ASME PTC 19.3 - 1998 Standard.
If in the Temperature Calculation window, you entered values for the Maximum, Normal, and Minimal Velocity, Smart Instrumentation will display the results for each velocity definition after recalculating each velocity option.
Velocity
Select Minimum, Normal, or Maximum fluid flow velocity.
Nominal size of sensing element
Select the required nominal size of the sensing element.
Diameter at tip
Smart Instrumentation enters this value automatically after you set the sensing element nominal size.
Limitation on wake to natural frequency ratio
Accept the displayed value, or type another value if needed.
Density of well material at 70 °F
Accept the displayed value and unit of measure, or type another density value. You can also select a different unit of measure.
Module of elasticity at 70 °F
Accept the displayed value and unit of measure, or type another module of elasticity value. You can also select a different unit of measure.
Well material
Select the required well material from this list.
Allowable stress for material at operating temperature
Type the required value and select its unit of measure.
Calculated Result Fields
After you select Calculate, the software displays the calculated values in these fields.
OK
Accept your changes, and close this dialog (displayed for batch calculation).
Close
For standard calculation, close this dialog. For batch calculation, close this dialog and discard your changes.
Calculate
Calculate according to the current settings and display the results in the appropriate fields (displayed for standard calculation).
