This window enables you to assign a channel to a specific instrument tag and thus effect an I/O assignment.

To access the I/O Assignment window, select the I/O terminations or I/O cards in the Domain Explorer and then do one of the following:

  • In the Domain Explorer, right-click an I/O card or I/O termination and then on the shortcut menu, select Actions > I/O Assignment.

  • In the Wiring module, select Actions > I/O Assignment.

  • Select IO Assignment icon 16bit on the Wiring module toolbar.

To open the Wiring Explorer in the I/O Assignment window, select beside the I/O card list.

Tag list (left pane)

I/O type

Allows you to select a I/O type of the instrument tag. The instrument tag I/O type shown in this field should match the I/O type of the terminal strip you selected in the I/O termination list. If the I/O type of the selected terminal strip is MIXED, the Tag number I/O type field becomes a list from which you can select an appropriate instrument tag I/O type. You can also select another I/O type if you set your I/O Assignment Wiring preferences to All I/O types.

Sort by

Allows you to select an option to sort the data in the left panel according to tag numbers or control system tags.

Find tag number

Allows you to type a name of a control system tag that you want to find in the Control System Tag column.

Tag Coupling Data Window

The tag coupling data window on the Tag list pane of the I/O Assignment window allows you to assign tag numbers to control system tags. This procedure is referred to as coupling.

Tag Number

This column lists all the available tag numbers for the current I/O card. If a control system tag appears next to a tag number, this means that this tag number has been coupled with that control system tag. To couple an selected uncoupled tag number with a free control system tag, on the module toolbar, select Associate Icon 16bit.

To effect I/O assignment, select a coupled tag number and drag it to an appropriate free channel in the Channel assignment data window on the right.

Control System Tag

This column lists all the available control system tags. Coupled control system tags appear next to tag numbers. Uncoupled control system tags appear next to a blank Tag Number field. To create a new control system tag, on the module toolbar, select .

Assignment details (right pane)

Note that some of the labels listed below may vary with your definitions for this panel. This is so because these labels are panel manufacturer-specific and they are set on the Panel Manufacturer dialog.

I/O termination

Allows you to select a terminal strip. To add other terminal strips to this list, select beside the list to open the Wiring Explorer.

Channel Assignment Data Window

The channel assignment data window on the I/O card details pane is where you implement I/O assignment, by dragging instrument tags couple with control system tags to this data window. If you drag an uncoupled tag number, Smart Instrumentation prompts you to create a control system tag for the tag number. To cancel the I/O assignment of highlighted coupled tags, on the module toolbar, select Local Signal Unassign icon 16bit.

Channel

Displays the channel names in the current I/O card. To edit channel properties, in this data window, select the channels you need and select Channel icon 16bit on the toolbar or select Actions > Channels.

  • When working in a project, the software displays assigned channels that belong to other projects or to As- Built. These channels are displayed in red and there is an information icon to the left of the channel name. You can select the information icon to open the Channel Status Information dialog to see which project the current channel has been claimed for.

  • When in a Project, the I/O assignment task is enabled for panels with inactive I/O cards, as long as one of the channels under the I/O card is active. When the I/O Assignment window opens, all the channels are listed (active and inactive). The inactive channels are shown in grey, and cannot be assigned.
