Review breaking changes and known issues for the new release

Before you start, review the breaking changes and known issues for the new version in the Smart API Manager Release Bulletin.

Save a configuration file

Saving the current configuration to a file allows you to configure the new version of Smart API Manager identically to the previous version, retaining all settings and customizations with no loss of data.

What you have to do depends on your previous version of Smart API Manager:

  • 2019 R1 and later - The Configuration Utility automatically saves a configuration file anytime you configure Smart API Manager. You can move on to uninstalling the previous version.

  • Earlier versions - You must save the configuration file manually.

To save a configuration file:

  1. Click Start > Intergraph Smart API Manager > Configuration Utility.

If the Configuration Utility does not appear on the Start menu, run:
    [Smart API Manager Install Folder]\Hexagon.Sam.ConfigurationTool.exe

  2. On the Welcome to the Smart API Manager Configuration Utility! page, select Re-configure and click Next.

If you are upgrading the Smart API Manager from version 4 to 5, we recommend you rename the corresponding Application Pool.

  3. Provide the credentials for the database System Administrator Account and click Next.

  4. Click Next until you reach the Review Configuration (Step 6 of 6) page.

  5. Click Save Configuration.

  6. Enter a File name and Password value (at least six characters) and click Save to save the configuration file to disk.

  7. Click Cancel to exit the configuration utility.

Uninstall the previous version

SHARED Tip You can also uninstall Smart API Manager silently from the command line.

  1. Log on to the Smart API Manager web server as an administrative user for the computer and IIS.

  2. Navigate to the Smart API Manager installation location, and double-click SAM_setup.exe.

Why can't I pick the Upgrade option?

We do not have an automatic upgrade process yet, so the Upgrade option is not selectable. If you haven't already, be sure that you've saved a configuration file.

  3. Select Modify/Uninstall Selected Programs and click Continue.

  4. This starts the previous version's setup.

  5. Select Uninstall.

Now you're ready to install the new version of Smart API Manager.
