Smart 3D Version
12 (2018)

Displays options for editing a block. The ribbon displays automatically when a block is selected in the graphic view or the Workspace Explorer.

 Block Properties

Activates the Block Properties Dialog Box. You can use this dialog box to modify properties such as assembly type or build method, which you cannot set on the ribbon.

 Block Size

Allows the top-level B0 block to be set to a larger size than the default hull bounding box. This option is only available when the top-level B0 block is selected.

Manufacturing Orientation

Sets the manufacturing orientation and a viewing direction of the selected block. When a block is created, it is given a default manufacturing orientation of ship's position as defined by the global coordinate system. The manufacturing orientation symbol displays:

The x--y' plane created for manufacturing orientation controls the orientation of the block as it is manufactured on a shop floor.

  • Manufacturing orientation is also known as assembly orientation.

  • X, Y, and Z are the global ship coordinates; x', y', and z' are the local manufacturing orientation coordinates.

  • z' axis is the local manufacturing orientation up-vector. By default it is in the same direction as the global Z axis.

  • Manufacturing orientation is used by Show Assembly View, the Structural Manufacturing task, and the assembly method drawings in the Ship Drawings task.

When the manufacturing orientation is modified, the rotation of the local axes is recomputed according to the following factors:

  1. The software determines which global axis, X, Y or Z, is closest to the local up-vector, z'.

  2. If it is X, then the y'-axis is aligned to be as close as possible to Y.

  3. If it is Y, then the x'-axis is aligned to be as close as possible to X.

  4. If it is Z, then the x'-axis is aligned to be as close as possible to X.

Finish

Commits the changes to the database. The Finish button remains disabled until the block is modified in some way.

 Cancel

Cancels the selections.

 Accept

Accepts the selections.

Name

Displays the name of the selected block. This field is editable.

Manufacturing Orientation Controls

Orient by baseplate

Allows you to define the manufacturing orientation of the selected item by selecting the face of a plate. The face of the plate becomes the x'-y' plane. If the selected plate is planar, the selected face is oriented horizontally (as on the workshop floor). If the selected plate is curved, the software sets that plate as the baseplate and then defaults to the 3-point method of definition for defining the up-vector.

Orient by 3 point plane

Allows you to define an x'-y' plane by three points, which in turn is used to define the z' manufacturing up-vector of the selected item. The defined plane is oriented horizontally (as on the workshop floor).

Edit view direction

Allows you to modify the view direction of the selected item. The view direction symbol is an arrow placed in the manufacturing orientation symbol. You can change the viewing direction to be used when viewing the assembly in manufacturing orientation and on building method drawings:

The x'-y' plane is divided into quadrants. An arrow shows the direction from which the object is viewed when viewing in manufacturing orientation and on assembly method drawings (isometric view from the indicated direction).

A default viewing direction is initially provided based on rules. When moving the mouse over one of the four base-plane quadrants, it highlights. Selecting one will swap the viewing direction and show the arrow in the selected quadrant.

Edit manufacturing orientation

Toggles the direction of the z ' manufacturing up-vector about the x'-y' plane used for definition of the orientation.
