Merges the content of two or more blocks or assemblies into one block or assembly.

Merging combines the content of two or more blocks or assemblies into one block or assembly.

After you create several blocks or assemblies you may need to merge two or more of them. Merge allows you to merge blocks into larger blocks.

If you merge blocks, all the defined volumes and elements (blocks, assemblies, and parts) in each block belong to the new block after the merge. If you merge assemblies, all the defined elements (assemblies and atomic parts) in each assembly will belong to the new assembly after the merge.

You can use this command with assemblies or blocks already selected. Because you can only perform the merge when certain rules are followed (see below), the system checks the items you have selected and, if rules are not complied with, the selection set is ignored and the command starts in its select step. Alternatively, the command starts in the select step with the items already selected, and ready to receive additional selections or to be finished. You can also use the command without any prior selection.

Rules of a Merge

  • Only blocks and assemblies can be merged; you cannot merge parts.

  • Blocks and assemblies cannot be merged with one another; you can only merge blocks with blocks or assemblies with assemblies.

  • Only blocks sharing a common plane can be merged. That is, only neighbor blocks can be merged.

  • Assemblies to be merged must be in the same block.

  • The block or assembly is merged in the higher common level.

  • The resulting blocks and assemblies must follow the definitions of blocks and assemblies.

  • The merge does not affect parts that are assigned to neighboring blocks.

  • You cannot modify the Merge command at a later stage. You must use the Split Block or Modify Block commands.

  • When merging blocks and you get to the last one, use the Flatten an assembly or block command instead of the Merge command to combine the blocks.
