A Common Part Definition is a set of rules that is divided into Candidates, Naming and Comparison Rule.

Common Part Definition - Select Definition Window

Name

Specifies the name of the rule.

Object Types

Specifies the type of object to which the rule applies.

Candidates Rule

Determines the set of parts that the software processes to find common parts. The rule can be an XML file specifying how to identify the candidates. The rule serves the following purposes:

  • Excludes any child parts that you do not want to evaluate.

  • Returns the set of parts or assemblies the service should evaluate.

Comparison Rule

Consists of logic for comparison. The rule uses an XML file that specifies the properties to be compared.

Naming Rule

Names the part.

Group By

Specify how to group the parts. Available choices are:

Sub-Assembly

Each sub-assembly under the selected assembly has its own groups of common parts of a particular object type. The software compares immediate child parts of each sub-assembly among themselves to find common parts.

Parent

The software evaluates all child parts at various levels under the selected assembly and associates groups created to the assembly.

The figure above only shows plates, profiles, collars, brackets and members. A reference data administrator can add rules to an existing Common Part Definition using bulkload service. The administrator can also add new Common Part Definitions.
