  • You must have administrator privileges on the site database to create a new model.

  • The computer on which you create the new model must have Project Management and Server Connectivity options installed.

  1. Open Project Management.

If Project Management does not point to the appropriate database, errors result when you open that database. To correct this problem, close Project Management, and use Modify Database and Schema Location to change the site database that the task is viewing..

  2. Select the Models root in the Project Management tree.

  3. Click Database > New > Model to open the New Model Dialog.

  4. On the General tab, type a name for the new model. Optionally, type values for Description, Site, and Owner.

  5. Select the type of model to create: Plant, Marine, Platform, or Material Handling.

  6. Specify a purpose for the model.

The default Model Purpose setting is Standard. However, if you intend to use the SDx integration commands such as assigning As-Built projects or synchronizing Smart Interop Object data between Smart 3D and SDx, you must set Model Purpose to Change Management.

  7. On the first row of the Databases tab, define the following values for Catalog:

    1. Server - Select the server on which the catalog database resides.

    2. Name - Select the catalog database with which to associate the new model.

  8. On the second row, select the server on which the new model database will reside.

The software automatically populates the Name field with the value you typed on the General tab. In the third row, the software assigns the same server to Reports and populates the Name field.

  9. In the Name generator server for model box, type the name of the server on which the name generator service is installed.

  10. In the Physical database and Log file boxes, specify the path for the location of the model database files and log files. You can use the default SQL location.

  11. Click OK to create the new model.

When processing completes, the software adds an icon for the new model in the Project Management tree. As with the new catalog database, the software creates a default permission group folder and default permission group. An icon for the Interference Detection Service () also displays in the tree view.

  • The specific icon that displays in the Project Management tree for the new model depends on the Model Type setting (Marine, Material Handling, Plant, or Platform) and the Model Purpose setting (Standard or Change Management). See Hierarchy icons.

  • Although the reports and reports schema databases are created automatically during the model generation process, they do not appear in the tree view of the model hierarchy. Reports database information can only be accessed via the Databases tab of the Model Properties Dialog.

  • To view and change descriptive information about the model, including giving it a different name or modifying access permissions, use the Properties Command .
