The Define Symbol Properties dialog box displays all variables and their names, values, and formulas in the symbol. Symbol parameters are also defined on this dialog box; these are the symbol properties that are externalized to the Excel workbook bulkload file. Within the catalog, symbol parameters are externalized as either standard variables for standard brackets or input variables for custom brackets.

  1. If the Feature AddIn toolbar is not already displayed, click Tools > Add-Ins, and then select the StdFeature option.

  2. On the Standard Feature Symbols toolbar, click Symbol Properties .

  3. Select the Parameters tab.

  4. Click each value in the dialog box (the corresponding graphical dimension will highlight in the symbol), and type a name in the Symbol Parameter box.

  5. Click Apply after entering each parameter.

  6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for all other dimensions that are to become symbol parameters.

  7. Click OK when all Symbol Parameters have been named.

The remaining tabs on the Symbol Properties dialog box are not required for features and can be ignored.

To avoid adding multiple symbol parameters that define the same types of attributes to the catalog, naming conventions should be developed by the reference data designer. The conventions delivered with the base catalog can be viewed on the CustomInterfaces worksheet of the bracket workbook. For more information, see Symbol Naming Conventions.
