The software delivers several templates that you can use to create your custom symbols. In addition, you can copy an existing symbol that closely resembles the symbol you want to create.

We recommend that you use CrossSectionTemplate.sym to create structural cross sections for the Structure task.

  1. Click Start > Intergraph Smart 3D > 2D Symbols.

  2. Select the template to start with by clicking File > New.

    • You can also start with an existing symbol file similar to the needed symbol. Click File > Open and select the file.

    • An existing symbol file cannot be opened in 2D Symbols by double-clicking it. Double-clicking the file will open it in SmartSketch Drawing Editor.

    • Templates are delivered to the [Product Folder]\Common2D\Symbol2D\Templates folder by default.

    • Existing marine symbols are delivered to the [Product Folder]\ShipStructure\Data folder by default.

  3. Click File > Save As and save the symbol file with a new name to a different working folder. Verify that the extension of the file is .sym.

Do not save your symbols in a folder that is under the software delivery folder. If you ever reload the software, your custom symbols files may get deleted. Always save your symbols to a folder that is backed up regularly.

  4. Right-click in the graphic view, and if required, select Grid Display and Grid Snap to assist in drawing the symbol.
