The first time you open Server Manager on a newly installed application server, you are prompted with a sequence of windows that perform the following actions on the server:

  1. Define or accept the default root path for the server.

The application server root path defines one location for all of your server files and defines all of the paths needed to run the software. The root path is created and can be modified through Server Manager. The first time you launch Server Manager, you are prompted to define a root path or accept the default root path C:\SPF Server Files.

Server Manager also uses the root path to set default paths for specific Server Manager nodes. For example, the SPF Sites node uses default paths for web site creation and for debugging.

For more information on modifying the root path, see Server folder structure.

  2. Create operating system users to act as application pool identities for installed software components.

  3. Grant permissions to a new local group, SPFUsers, which contains the new system user accounts, for access to the new server product folder structure and other system folders. A log file can be found at \SPF Server Files\Temp\ServerManager\Permissions.log.

For more information on how to edit the scripts that grant permissions or to manually run the scripts at a later time, see Grant permissions to the folder structure on the server.
