You must add your data to the template in a hierarchical order. We understand that it can be tedious to represent a hierarchy in a spreadsheet. To help, we've prepared a template such that it is easy for you to add data.

  1. Start by adding the first work package in the first row. This is the first work package at the top level of your project.

    1. Enter the name in the WorkPackage column.

    2. Type X in the Level1 column to let Smart Build Insight know that this is a top-level work package.

    3. Do not enter anything in the WorkStep column. We'll add the work steps later.

    4. Add work package details in the remaining columns.

    5. Add the work package child items in the second row. The child items could be a work package or a work step. Enter the item name in the WorkPackage or WorkStep column depending on what the child item type is.

    6. Type X in the Level2 column.

    7. Enter details to the remaining rows.

SHARED Tip You must add date and time for the work package and work step date fields in MM/dd/yyyy HH:mm format.

  2. Repeat these steps, making sure you:

  • Only put one work package or one work step on each row

  • Choose the right level of the hierarchy

  • Keep all parent and children items together.

Don't understand the structure of the schedule hierarchy?

Because its hard to represent a hierarchy in a spreadsheet, we do this by putting all the work packages and work items in hierarchical order, then indicating which level of the hierarchy each item is at.

  • An item is a work package if it has a name in the WorkPackage column, or a work step if it has a name in the WorkStep.

  • Work packages at the top level of the project schedule hierarchy have an X in the Level1 column.

  • Work package and work steps that have a parent (in other words, they are at some level other than 1) have an X in the appropriate level column. They are each listed separately on rows following their parent.
