The normal distribution is by far the most widely used. It is used in the example curves above. It assumes that the population is distributed evenly to the left and right side of the mean, in other words the ‘skewness’ of the distribution is 0.

In reliability, engineering calculations like the MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) and the associated standard deviation are all based on the assumption that the failures are normally distributed.
