On the Trace Route popup, you can collect details of the linear equipment you want to attach to the work order as Multi-Equipment Child (MEC) work orders or as regular child work orders. The tracing aspect is since you can identify a section of a route on which work is required, and then crossover onto another route using defined branch points on that section of the route. From there, you can then crossover to another route, etc. You are "tracing" the routes to determine the scope of the work.

To use tracing, you must use the concepts of Right of Way, Routes and Segments in your setup. And the definition of the segments must include branch points. The following example shows three routes and one crossover route ‘n.’ There are three additional crossovers, but these are short, and it was decided not to create separate routes for these. As you can see, you can crossover, or trace, on the left-hand side from route 1 to route 2. From there you can trace to route 3, and then via route ‘n’ go back to route 2 and then finally go back to route 1 again.

The crossovers are identified by pairs of branch points. Meaning that both routes involved must have a segment that is identified as a Branch Point and both these segments must have the same unique identification, either by using the same Equipment or the same Branch Identifier. So, to support the first crossover on the left, both route 1 and 2 must have a segment with the same identifier, in this example A12. Note pairs A23 and B12 to support the other 2 crossovers.

Since route ‘n’ is an actual linear equipment itself, the crossover from route 3 to 2 is indirect via route ‘n’. This requires similar branch point pairs, but now you need a pair between route 3 and ‘n’ and a pair between route 2 and ‘n’, in this example B23 and C23, respectively.

This screen has the following important attributes relating to the trace:

  • MEC Work Orders - If selected the system will create MEC child work orders when you click Submit, otherwise it will create regular child work orders.

  • Copy Activities - If selected the system will copy the activities from the parent work order to the child work orders when you click Submit, otherwise it will not copy activities.

  • Route - Select a route from the list of equipment. This lookup is sensitive to the selected work order Equipment.

If you are starting a new trace and the work order equipment is:

A Right of Way, the system will only show Routes that belong to that Right of Way, as defined on the Routes tab.

A Route, the system will only show this same Route as an option.

Any other equipment, including any non-linear equipment, the system will show all Routes as an option.

If you are continuing an existing trace, then the system will only show Routes to which you can crossover. This is based on the defined branch points, where crossover is possible, from the last traced Route.

Once Route is selected you can define the start and end of the work on that route like the way already described earlier for the Work Order screen, using the following fields:

  • From Reference Point

  • From Offset

  • From Offset Percentage

  • From Offset Direction

  • From Reference, From Ref. Offset and From Ref. Offset Direction

  • From X Coordinate

  • From Y Coordinate

  • From Latitude

  • From Longitude

  • From Relationship Type

  • From Horizontal Offset

  • From Horizontal Offset UOM

  • From Horizontal Offset Type

  • From Vertical Offset

  • From Vertical Offset UOM

  • From Vertical Offset Type

  • And a similar set of To Fields to define the end of the work on the Route.

Buttons

  • Add To List - If the Route is selected and the from and to are determined, click this button to add your selection to the grid. The system will also update:

  • Trace From - With the selected route and description of that route and will set the trace status to ‘Continue Trace.’

  • Trace No. - Will indicate the trace number and within each trace the step. After your first route was added trace number will be 1 and step will be 2, indicating you are tracing your second route of that trace.

  • Remove From List - Select a record in the grid, then click this button to remove that record. Any Related Equipment may be removed as well.

  • Clear - Clear the entries you have made and refresh the screen.

  • New Trace - Start a new trace from another location or a different route. The system will generate a new Trace Number and the Route lookup will be reset to its initial state as well. You can use this function any time you want to skip from one route to another, without using the defined branch points and crossovers. Any existing data on the screen remains.

  • Continue Trace - Select an existing trace record from the grid and continue an existing trace you started earlier. The system will set Trace Number to that of the selected route but will increase the step. And the Route lookup will only show routes, based on the defined branch points, where crossover is possible from the last traced route (=record with the highest step) within the selected Trace Number. You can use this function any time you want to add routes to a trace you stopped earlier. Any existing data on the screen remains.

  • Add all Routes of Right of Way - This function will automatically add all routes of the Right of Way to the grid. This function is only available if the work order Equipment is a Right of Way. The from and to is also derived from the work order data. Any existing data, already on the screen, is replaced.

  • Add Related Equipment - Select an existing trace record from the grid and add any related equipment, as defined on the Linear References tab, to the grid as well. Any existing data on the screen remains.

  • Submit - After you have added all required routes to the grid, when you click Submit, the system will create MEC work orders for each added Route. The level at which the MEC work orders are created depends on Organization Option TRACELEV. If this option is set to:

    • ROUTE - MEC or regular child work orders will be on route level. Meaning a child work order is created for each route displayed in the grid.

    • SEGMENT - MEC or regular child work orders will be on segment level. Meaning a child work order is created for each segment, in whole or partial, that is associated to the selected section (from and to) of the routes in the grid. Assuming that segments are usually shorter than routes, it is expected that more child work orders will be created with this setting of the Organization Option.

Any Related Equipment added to the grid will also be processed into MEC or regular child work orders. Regardless the setting of the Organization Option.
