Select a format and select Edit > Properties.

On the Format Properties dialog, select Insert Field.

If you are creating a new format, on the Format Properties dialog, select Insert Field.

A new format field is appended to the active format.

On the Field Properties dialog, you can change the following values:

To change the readout, define the character type or select the appropriate text format.

To change the precision, select the degree of accuracy necessary for reporting numeric values.

For any format category except String, to change the minimum length, type the minimum number of characters in the Minimum length box. To change the fixed-length string format for the String format category, type the change in the Fixed-length string box.

To change the alignment, select left, right, or center.
You can access the Alignment box only after you type a value in the Minimum length field or select Fixed-length string.

To change the units of measure, select the units necessary to define the text format. You define the main unit of measurement in the Primary field. You can also define a format using a single field that involves secondary/tertiary units. An example of a format that includes primary and secondary units is 3 ft. 2.6 in; an example of a format that includes primary, secondary, and tertiary units is 17 quart 1 pint 8.1 oz.

To select or change the padding character, select the Zero, Space, or User-defined option. For the User-defined option, type a filler character in the box to the right of the option.
