Qualification pathways are based on competencies. When a learner is being trained for a specific job, they must complete a set of competencies (also known as skills).

There are two types of competencies:

  • Reusable competency: A competency that is common to more than one qualification pathway. If a learner is assigned a pathway that contains a reusable competency that they have already completed as part of another qualification pathway, the learner receives credit for the highest proficiency level previously completed. The learner is not required to redo the same competency in another pathway.
Reusable competencies appear with a filled-in star icon and can only be edited by users assigned an admin role and granted the Edit competency permission.

  • Single-use competency: A competency that is unique to a specific pathway and not reused elsewhere.
Single-use competencies appear with an empty star icon and can be edited from the qualification pathway by any user.

A single use competency can now be converted into a reusable competency. A Make reusable button allows the learning administrator to convert a single use competency into a reusable one. The single use competency must be active and have a valid path.

Once a single use competency is converted to reusable, it cannot be changed back to single use.
